MODERN HOUSE ON A FARM

Two sloping forms are our response to building on a farm in the rural countryside. Vernacular rural design principles of narrow plan (for ease of daylighting, and ventilation), strong simple forms, good solid to void ratios on elevation, and high quality materials are followed throughout, with the two forms splayed and offset slightly to form morning and evening courtyards, accessed from the internal spaces.

Flexibility was key for the clients here. The house has three bedrooms, but each of the double height forms have potential for an internal fit out of another room at first floor level – a large mezzanine in the living block, and an additional bedroom in the bedroom block, should these ever be needed.

There are clear concise design moves made here, the polished concrete floor unifies the living block, which is lit with directional windows, chosen to best capture the views from the house, and the exposed ceiling structure provides an aesthetically pleasing rhythm, as well as working to provide excellent acoustics in the tall space.
